The ELSA Way follows the values of the ELSA AI Lab Northern Netherlands. Each value below comes with a commitment you can hold us to.

We work in the open

The book is written on GitHub, where anyone can read the source, suggest a change or report a gap. We actively ask researchers, practitioners, developers and community members across the network to contribute.

We put patients’ views in the text

Patients feel the effects of healthcare AI most directly and are often left out of its development. We include their perspectives, needs and concerns in the chapters themselves, and the stakeholder engagement chapter explains how to involve them in your own project.

We write for every reader

Guidance only helps if the people who need it can read it. We write for data scientists and ward nurses, ethicists and policy makers alike, and we explain technical terms the first time they appear.

We show who changed what

Roles, contribution guidelines and review steps are set out in the Community Handbook. Each page’s change history is on GitHub: use the GitHub icon at the top of the page.

We make advice usable

Each section aims to give you something to do: a method, a worked example or a tool from the Toolbox. Where we cannot yet do that, we say so.

We keep updating

AI methods, healthcare practice and regulation keep changing, and so does this book. We update chapters when the rules change, when readers point out errors and when projects show us what works.
